Art Show!

Yesterday I had 8 illustrations printed on canvas and paper and displayed in a local gallery in Norfolk, "Share That Experience". It was also the opening of another, larger show next door so I bit off their traffic. It was fantastic!

Thanksgiving

While it is a great day for families to get together and break bread, the history degree within wants to point out the fact that this holiday will forever remembered by a small minority as the beginning of the end for millions of Native Americans and I hope some people realize the horrible irony in this.

clear

This is an old illustration that kept popping in my head regarding "clear" because it was such a beautiful clear day that inspired this illustration of some houses near me.

Smoke

I don't post enough. Especially for my boy Joe Dunlap in Canada. But this week's topic is smoke so I integrated with some suburban aerials I am experimenting with.

my-caca

I am still considering entering the world of political/social cartooning and gave a stab at my own state's Senator George Allen and his recent use of the term "macaca" directed at an American of Indian descent. The word is slang for "monkey" in which George Allen decided to use as a funny way to pick on someone representing the other campaign. I wish he would remain quiet instead of picking upon others.

illustration friday- zombiephobia

This week's topic is phobia. I know it may be silly but I am afraid of zombies. Zombie movies always managed to spook me. "When there's no more room in Hell, the dead shall walk the earth" Gotta love George Romero.

illustration friday- farm

This is a piece I completed in my graduate class this past spring at ODU. I wish I could make it into an animation of how a farm becomes a suburbarm. Yes I just made that word up right there.

Here is another recent piece along the same line of how farm is destroyed as suburb grows from highway. (This one is a painting)

illustration friday- run

This week I am giving a double shot of Hokie pride with the impending football season. Maybe I will see some of you at the UNC-VT game on Septermber 9. I miss the college days...

...watching Michael Vick play live was pretty amazing...

...as well as beating our arch-rival UVA.

A little self-promotion

This month I was the feature artist in Portfolio Weekly, a newsprint magazine published in the Hampton Roads area. All in all the writer, Betsy Dijulio, did a great great job of translating everything we talked about into an article I am very excited about. Photo by Kathy Keeney.

illustration friday- match

This one's political. Right now the frontrunners for the 2008 election are Hillary Clinton for the Democrats and John McCain for the Republicans. Though two years away I predict this match to get brutal.

Reno 911!

One of my favorite shows on the television.

illustration friday- play

For this week's submission of "play" I am using a commission I did for a Penn State Alumni who wanted a collage of his Nittany Lions. Final print size 20" x 30". I do enjoy football season...

illustration friday- capture

This week's post made me think of being trapped or "captured" watching television. Some days it feels good to veg out though. But not all the time.

illustration friday- clean

For this week's topic I thought about the old-fashioned way to clean. French maids!!!

illustration friday- opposites

Going political made me think of these two. Wow what a contrast in personality, leadership style, brains, morales, and background. Both play such huge roles in history and yet so many mistakes highlighted. Honestly think of one nice thing to say about the one you hate. Tough huh?

illustration friday- sacrifice

I just thought of firefighters when I saw this topic. I watch that show "Rescue Me" a lot, and while it is mostly a drama based on some crazy firefighters it made me think of what they do to get the job done and put their lives on the line. Now back to your regular jesus programing...

illustration friday- skyline

This is an old illustration I did of my favorite city in America- Pittsburgh, PA- home of Andy Warhol and a great, great sports town. I was just there two weeks ago to see some family and took a lot of pictures I hope to post illustratinos of soon.

Warhol Interior Panoramic

I am on a roll with these now. If you know me, then you know I love to go by the Warhol whenever I am in Pittsburgh. The man produced a lot of awesome work, and the museum is 7 floors of fun. Here is one exhibit room for the recent exhibit, "The Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene, 1974-1984". The punching bags have a depiction of Jesus and the word "judge" all over it. I don't know why so look it up.

illustration friday- sticky

A late late post. If you ever saw O'Reilly on The Daily Show this is my interpretaion of what happened to him. He ran his mouth in typical O'Reilly fashion, only Stewart is way quicker than him and made him look like an idiot. He would have been better off slimed a la "You Can't Do That On Television"- rendering him sticky. I know that was a stretch.

home

So not to reveal too much about myself, but here is a panoramic of the house I grew up in, with my immediate family making an appearnce within the illustration. I grew up in a nice shady neighborhood and while I cursed the trees after 10 hours of illustrating, I am happy I grew up there. Also, if you know my father, don't tell him about this because I am printing and framing it for his birthday present 10 days from now. Thanks. And if you want me to illustrate your family home in this manner shoot me an email.

Jungle- illustration friday

A few days late on getting this one done- I thought of doing something with the "Jungle Book" but instead did a collection of animals in a collage style. I really enjoy doing animal illustratoins- but not all the spots and stripes!

Greedy Pat

I have always disliked Pat Robertson and the 700 club for their bad misuse of religion and personal agenda to gain money and power by swindling people. I grew up in Virginia Beach where Robertson spews his rhetoric on a daily basis and I will dance a jig the day he passes on. Too bad his sniveling son will take over for him.

Naylor Dock

My friend Jim gave me a photo to paint over a year ago and just recently with my full on switch to illustration I completed it. I hope to send it to him soon to see if he wants it printed or even printed on cavnas.

illustration Friday-Angels & Devils

My weekly submission to Illustration Friday. This week's topic "angels & devils" inspired me to make light of the celebrity/fan obsession with Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes. Reruns of Dawson's Creek will never be the same...

Times Square

Just finished this illustration of Times Square in NYC. I have only been there once but I hope to get back there soon.
